Playing for Pizza: a Novel by John Grisham is a tale about third-string quarterback, Rick Dockery who plays for the Cleveland Browns. Rick finally gets the chance to shine in the AFC Championship game but ends up choking in what could have been his crowning moment. At this point, Rick is pretty much laughed out of the NFL and his future is looking bleak. However, Rick has found an opportunity to travel to Parma Italy and play on an international team. Once there, Rick finds meaning to his life in unexpected moments.
This is a great story of reflection and redemption.
I received this book in 2008 as a Christmas gift from my husband. Thankfully, he feeds my passion for books. I have read almost every novel John Grisham has written and am a big fan. As much as I love reading a good Grisham courtroom thriller, I find myself in love with the books he has written that veer from his normal; books like “A Painted House” and “Friday Night Lights”. Though I had never been to Italy, Grisham was able to paint a beautiful portrait of words that made me feel like I was in Parma with Rick Dockery.
This novel is a light and relaxing read. It is perfect for lazy day reading. 🙂
